Tesla has officially begun construction on a dedicated production facility for its humanoid robot, Optimus, at the company’s Gigafactory Texas complex near Austin.
The Optimus production plant will be the first purpose-built facility of its kind, designed to produce up to 10 million humanoid robots per year once fully ramped. The plan was first revealed during Tesla’s 2025 annual shareholder meeting, where CEO Elon Musk described the project as “a transformative step toward a world where humanoid robots become a larger economic force than vehicles.”
The new site is located on the east side of the Giga Texas campus, where land clearing and foundation work have already begun. Construction activity has been spotted near River Road by drone pilot and Giga Texas watcher Joe Tegtmeyer, which is currently being expanded to support increased traffic flow to the area.

Tesla expects the Optimus factory to begin initial production in 2027, coinciding with the next phase of expansion at Giga Texas. Early assembly will likely focus on scaled pilot lines for Optimus Gen-3, which Tesla has been testing internally for factory logistics, packaging, and material handling tasks, and is expected to make a public debut before the end of the year.
By late 2026, crews on site are expected to complete major structural work and begin equipment installation, preparing for pre-production validation the following year. The facility’s modular layout is expected to mirror Tesla’s highly automated vehicle manufacturing philosophy, integrating AI-driven inspection and self-learning robotics into the production flow.
At the same time, the Giga Texas Riverfront Ecological Park project is moving ahead, transforming large sections of land along the Colorado River into public sports fields, trails, and nature zones. The initiative—developed in partnership with local authorities—will eventually offer public access to recreational areas adjacent to Tesla’s factory, providing a unique mix of advanced manufacturing and environmental restoration.
