Tesla has applied to construct a new building next to Giga Texas that will manufacture cathodes for its electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
According to a copy of the application first shared by Electrek, the project is inconspicuously named “Cathode.”
It does not list the intended use of the property except to say it will be an “Industrial Use facility along with associated improvements.”
Although the application doesn’t name Tesla specifically, it does list Colorado River Project LLC as a co-applicant, the same company that Tesla has used for other permits related to Giga Texas.
Reuters was able to confirm the connection, and that it will be a cathode factory, with the city’s development services department.
“I can confirm that this is for the Tesla project and this permit is for a cathode building,” a spokeswoman for the city’s development services department said on Thursday, adding that the city did not have further information.
Based on the filing, the new facility will be built on a 32-acre parcel of land to the east of the current Giga Texas facility.
Tesla is still waiting to receive final approvals to begin manufacturing customer cars at Giga Texas. When they do, the Model Ys that will be rolling off the production line will feature Tesla’s new 4680 battery cells inside a structural battery pack.
We have already seen a long 4680 battery cell production line installed inside Giga Texas. With the addition of this cathode factory, Tesla will be able to greatly increase production of the battery cells.
