Tesla and Boxabl partner to build modular “Micromenity” structures in new Supercharger pilot program

Tesla is taking another step toward enhancing the Supercharging experience, this time by partnering with Boxabl, the modular building startup known for its foldable “Casita” homes.

A newly filed SEC document reveals that Tesla has commissioned Boxabl to design and construct a pilot “Micromenity” structure—a compact, modular building that could eventually appear at Supercharger stations around the world. (h/t: Sawyer Merritt)

Although several details in the filing have been redacted, such as sections related to the plans and specifications, the document confirms that Tesla has issued a purchase order for “a comprehensive package for one Micromenity building.”

What Tesla Might Be Testing

While Tesla has already experimented with amenities at larger flagship locations—including the new 56-stall Supercharger in Magnant, France, which features a dedicated lounge—the Boxabl project appears aimed at creating smaller, highly repeatable units. These “Micromenity” buildings could potentially include restrooms, vending options, Wi-Fi lounges, driver-waiting areas, or other essentials that make charging stops more comfortable without the cost and complexity of full-scale facilities.

Boxabl’s core expertise in rapid-deploy, prefabricated structures aligns well with Tesla’s push to scale its Supercharger network efficiently. Many of Tesla’s new high-volume V4 sites are being built in remote or highway-adjacent areas where third-party amenities are limited. A small, modular building that can be delivered on a truck and installed quickly would give Tesla far more control over the site experience.

Why Boxabl?

The partnership between Tesla and Boxabl also carries an interesting historical footnote. In 2021, rumours spread that Elon Musk was living in a Boxabl Casita (home) after relocating to Texas. It was later all but confirmed by Boxable that he was living in one of their units, but Musk clarified he used it only as a guest house on his property in near SpaceX’s launch site in South Texas—saying his main home was even smaller.

Boxabl’s sudden surge into the spotlight following those rumours dramatically boosted the company’s visibility. Musk’s acknowledgement fuelled massive public interest, helped expand the company’s social presence, and played a role in driving investor attention as Boxabl ramped up production of its foldable modular homes.
