Elon Musk has announced the relocation of SpaceX and X headquarters from California to Texas. Musk made the announcements in a series of posts on X, saying they were spurred on by a new law on transgender student notifications in California.
Musk’s announcement came just a few hours after California Governor Gavin Newsom’s signed AB1955, a law prohibiting school districts from requiring staff to notify parents of their child’s gender identification change. In a follow-up post, Musk said he had discussions with Newsom last year, saying to the Governor that laws such as this would “force families and companies to leave California to protect their children.”
This wasn’t the only reason Musk decided to move two of his companies to Texas, explaining in his posts the new legislation was the “final straw.”
Moving SpaceX to Starbase
According to Musk SpaceX will move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. Starbase, located near Brownsville, Texas, has been the focal point for many of SpaceX’s recent programs, including the launches of Starship.
X Relocates to Austin
Alongside SpaceX, Musk also announced the relocation of X’s headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, Texas. The social media platform, which has undergone significant changes under Musk’s leadership since he purchased the company, will join Tesla in the capital of Texas.
Tesla moved its headquarters from Palo Alto to Austin in 2021, with Musk citing similar frustrations with California’s regulatory landscape.
Musk also recently pushed to have Tesla’s state of incorporation moved from Delaware to Texas, after a court ruling voided his compensation package. That move required a shareholder vote, which easily passed last month.
The Boring Company and SpaceX have also recently moved their state of incorporation to Nevada and Texas respectively, following the court ruling.
