Rivian Recalls R1T and R1S After Highway Assist Crash

Rivian has announced an over-the-air (OTA) recall after identifying a rare software-related issue affecting its Highway Assist system. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under campaign number 25V585, stems from a low-speed collision involving a 2025 Rivian R1S operating on software version 2025.14.

Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall.

What Happened

On May 14, 2025, an R1S with Highway Assist (HWA) engaged was traveling in stop-and-go traffic when the system experienced a one-time functional limitation due to a misclassification at very low speed. The driver, who failed to intervene, collided with the vehicle ahead at approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). No injuries were reported, and the vehicle remained drivable.

Following the incident, Rivian’s autonomy team launched an internal investigation and developed a corrective OTA update. Software version 2025.18.30, released on June 3, 2025, has addressed the classification issue and has already been installed on more than 99% of potentially affected vehicles.

Scope of the Recall

The recall covers over 24,000 Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles running software versions prior to 2025.18.30. While the number of impacted vehicles that have yet to install the OTA fix is small, the automaker opted to file an official recall after determining the issue could pose a safety risk under federal guidelines.

In its report to NHTSA, Rivian noted it is not aware of any injuries or additional incidents linked to the issue. The automaker has categorized the update as a voluntary safety recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

The company emphasized that Highway Assist is an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance feature and not an autonomous driving system. Like all Level 2 systems, it requires continuous driver attention and intervention.

Owner Notification

Owners who have not yet updated their vehicles will receive notifications by November 4, 2025, instructing them to install the new software. Rivian confirmed that no dealership visits are necessary since the update is delivered wirelessly.
