Rivian officially unveils R2 specs and pricing, confirming Canada deliveries in 2027

Rivian has officially unveiled the full specifications and pricing for its upcoming R2 electric SUV for the U.S. market, confirming much of the information that leaked online yesterday. The smaller, more affordable SUV will start at $57,990 for the first version to arrive. Rivian has also confirmed that Canadian deliveries will begin in 2027.

The R2 is built on an all-new mid-size platform designed to bring Rivian’s design, performance and technology to a significantly broader audience while maintaining the capability and adventure-focused character the brand is known for.

R2 Performance Leads the Lineup

The first model to reach customers will be the R2 Performance with the Launch Package, starting at $57,990. Deliveries are expected to begin in spring 2026 in the U.S.

The Performance variant features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, with Rivian also claiming rapid highway acceleration from 50–70 mph in as little as 1.55 seconds. Power comes from an 88 kWh battery pack delivering an estimated 330 miles (531 km) of range, while DC fast charging allows the battery to go from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes.

Rivian has equipped the model with several premium features including matrix LED headlights, semi-active suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel, along with 12-way power driver and passenger seats with lumbar adjustment. The SUV also includes Rivian’s Torch flashlight integrated into the driver door, integrated tow hooks, and a rear drop glass window integrated into the tailgate.

Drivers will also have access to multiple drive modes including All-Purpose, Conserve, Snow, All-Terrain, Rally, Soft Sand, Sport, and Launch Mode.

The Launch Package adds additional features including a lifetime subscription to Rivian’s Autonomy+ driver assistance system, a tow package, and the exclusive Launch Green exterior colour. Rivian also includes a special Rivian Green anodized key fob with the Launch Package.

The R2 measures 186 inches long—about 15 inches shorter than the R1S—and offers 9.6 inches of ground clearance. It also has a towing capacity of up to 4,400 pounds (1,996 kg) and will include a native NACS charging port for access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Additional Trims Arriving Later

Rivian confirmed several additional trims that will follow the launch model.

The R2 Premium will start at $53,990 and arrive later in 2026. It uses the same 88 kWh battery pack and offers the same 330 miles (531 km) of range, but produces 450 horsepower. While it retains most comfort features, it drops the semi-active suspension and includes fewer drive modes.

Premium models will still include matrix LED headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, 12-way power driver and passenger seats, Rivian’s Torch flashlight in the driver door, integrated tow hooks, and a nine-speaker premium audio system.

A rear-wheel-drive Standard trim will arrive in 2027 starting at $48,490. It features a single motor producing 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque and delivers the longest range in the lineup at 345 miles (555 km).

To reach the lower price point, this version simplifies the interior with an all-black Black Crater interior, a five-speaker audio system producing 525W, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. It also includes a 12-way power driver seat with lumbar adjustment and an 8-way power passenger seat, while offering drive modes such as All-Purpose, Conserve, Snow, and Sport.

Rivian also plans an entry-level R2 variant starting at $45,000, scheduled for late 2027, with an estimated range of 275 miles (442 km). Additional specifications for that model have not yet been released.

Utility and Storage

Inside, Rivian says the R2 is designed to maximize interior space and versatility. The SUV offers 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage, including a 5.2 cubic-foot front trunk, dual glove boxes, and fold-flat rear seats that create a level loading surface for larger gear such as bikes or camping equipment.

The rear drop glass window, available on Performance and Premium trims, allows drivers to lower the glass into the liftgate for improved airflow or to transport longer items such as surfboards.

Capability and Platform Advantages

Despite being smaller than Rivian’s R1 models, the R2 retains the brand’s off-road focus. The SUV rides on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, offers 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and features a 25-degree approach angle and 26-degree departure angle.

Rivian says the R2 is also nearly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1, improving maneuverability and efficiency while maintaining capability. The vehicle’s structural battery pack lowers the center of gravity, helping deliver a more planted driving feel both on and off the road.

Technology and Software

R2 introduces a new software-defined vehicle architecture designed to support future updates and advanced driver assistance features. The system uses a multi-modal perception stack with 11 HDR cameras totaling 65 megapixels and five radar sensors.

The vehicle also features 200 TOPS of edge AI computing power, enabling Rivian’s upcoming in-vehicle voice assistant to run tasks locally even when the vehicle is offline.

Inside the cabin, the R2 features dual digital displays — one for the driver and one central display — along with a redesigned steering wheel that incorporates haptic “halo” control wheels capable of scrolling, pushing, pulling, and tilting.

Leak Proved Largely Accurate

Interestingly, nearly all of the official specifications match the details that leaked online yesterday, when an article containing the pricing and trim breakdown was briefly published before being removed.

The leak correctly identified the major elements of the lineup, including the $57,990 launch price, the 656 horsepower Performance model, the 330-mile range, and the pricing for the Premium and rear-wheel-drive versions.

Only minor differences appeared in the official announcement. Rivian confirmed additional details about the Launch Package, including that it bundles a lifetime Autonomy+ subscription, tow package, and Launch Green paint.

Canada R2 Deliveries in 2027

While U.S. deliveries begin this spring, Rivian confirmed Canadian customers will start receiving the R2 in 2027. The company noted Canadian specifications and pricing are expected to be released closer to the vehicle’s launch north of the border.

This is not unexpected given the company’s need to satisfy U.S. demand first, but also because of the current tariff situation between the two countries that would push pricing far beyond a simple currency conversion.
