Rivian Adds UWB-powered Digital Key Support With 2025.46 OTA update

Rivian is giving owners of its second-generation R1T and R1S an easier, more seamless way to unlock and drive their vehicles. Later this month, the automaker will roll out its .46 over-the-air (OTA) software update, enabling full Digital Key support that lives natively inside Apple, Google, and Samsung phone wallets.

With this upgrade, your Rivian key no longer relies on the mobile app — instead, it will be stored at the operating-system level on compatible smartphones and smartwatches, unlocking a long list of new capabilities and convenience features.

Thanks to the UWB (Ultra-Wideband) modules included on Gen 2 hardware, vehicles will now detect the exact proximity of the phone or watch with much higher accuracy. Owners will simply walk up to their truck or SUV and the vehicle will unlock automatically, just like using a traditional key fob.

NFC support is also included, enabling drivers to unlock and start their Rivian even when the phone battery dies. On devices that support Power Reserve, this functionality continues for up to five hours — perfect insurance for long days outdoors or emergencies.

The update also enables native Apple Watch and compatible Android watch access, letting owners leave their phones behind while still unlocking, locking, and driving the vehicle.

Digital Keys can also be shared just as easily as sending a text message. Rivian’s new OS-level implementation means a friend can receive a secure car key remotely, walk up to the vehicle, unlock, and drive — no extra apps or setup required.

Rivian is also doubling the number of supported digital keys per vehicle, from four to eight. That makes it easier for multi-driver households or anyone looking to manage temporary access for guests and other people.

Only Gen 2 R1T and R1S owners will get the feature at launch, as those vehicles include the hardware needed for UWB support.
