Rivian is set to enhance the in-car entertainment experience for its R1T and R1S models, as the automaker is preparing to launch Google Cast and a native YouTube app, allowing users to stream high-definition video content directly to their vehicle’s 15-inch center display.
Google Cast
With the addition of Google Cast, Rivian owners will be able to stream high-definition video content from their mobile devices directly to their vehicle’s 15-inch touchscreen. The process is straightforward: ensure the vehicle is parked and your phone or tablet is connected to the Rivian’s Wi-Fi hotspot. Then, simply tap the Google Cast icon on the device and select “Rivian” as the casting option.
Google Cast’s integration allows users to control playback through the vehicle’s touchscreen, enabling them to play, pause, or skip ahead without needing to touch their mobile device. Additionally, owners can respond to texts and calls on their phones without interrupting the video playback or draining their device’s battery.
For obvious safety reasons, video playback will automatically pause when the vehicle is shifted into Drive mode.
YouTube
Rivian is also introducing a native YouTube app within the new Video Application menu. Like Google Cast, the YouTube app’s playback can be controlled via the vehicle’s touchscreen. Users can enjoy seamless streaming without worrying about interruptions from phone notifications.
Similar to Google Cast, the video playback will pause automatically when the vehicle is in motion.
While Rivian’s new features mark a significant step forward in in-car entertainment, some owners are still hoping for future integrations with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although Google Cast and YouTube provide substantial functionality, the flexibility offered by these other platforms remains a highly requested feature among owners.
