Nissan has made two announcements on Tuesday. The first is when Ariya owners in Canada and the US can expect to receive their North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters. Additionally, Nissan has launched the Nissan Energy Charge Network, that isn’t actually their own charging network but rather a new feature designed to simplify EV charging through the MyNISSAN app.
NACS Adapters for Ariya
According to Nissan, NACS adapters will be available “starting later this year.” In their press release Nissan specifically says the adapter will only be available for Ariya owners, with no mention of whether it will be available for Leaf owners at a future date. Nissan didn’t specify whether the adapter will be provided for free, or if Ariya owners will have to pay for it.
Nissan also doesn’t explicitly say access to Tesla’s Supercharger network will come at the same time as the launch of the adapter, but it would make sense for Ariya drivers to have access soon after, which means a potential Supercharger access date for Nissan also in 2024.
Nissan is currently listed as “coming soon” on Tesla’s website, alongside Volvo, Polestar, and Mercedes-Benz.
Nissan reiterated plans to integrate NACS ports directly into its EVs for both Canadian and US markets in 2025.
Nissan Energy Charge Network
Nissan’s second announcement is the launch of the Nissan Energy Charge Network of over 20,000 public chargers in Canada and over 90,000 in the US. The network includes partners such as ChargeHub, Shell Recharge, and also Tesla, with Nissan saying it plans to expand this list further in the future.
Through the MyNissan app, Ariya drivers and future Nissan EV owners will be able to manage their EV charging needs. The app offers real-time charger availability, charging station locations, payment options, and the ability to start a charging session with just a tap.
This time Nissan did mention the Leaf, and unfortunately this functionality will not be available to them. However, Nissan says Leaf drivers can still use the NissanConnect EV and Services app to find charging locations.
