Newfoundland and Labrador to Add 14 Ultra-Fast EV Chargers in 2026

Newfoundland and Labrador is making another major investment in clean transportation by expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. The provincial government, alongside Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro), announced a $3.8 million investment to install 14 new public fast-charging stations in 2026. NL Hydro will also contribute an additional $463,000 to support the rollout.

First Fast Chargers Coming to Southern Labrador

For the first time, EV drivers in Southern Labrador will gain access to fast charging. Four stations, each capable of up to 120 kW, will be built in L’Anse-au-Loup and Port Hope Simpson, marking a milestone for the region’s transportation infrastructure.

The project also includes the installation of 10 ultra-fast chargers, delivering up to 400 kW, at high-demand sites across the island. These stations will be among the fastest in North America and the quickest available in Atlantic Canada, able to charge compatible EVs to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes.

NL Hydro is currently inviting applications from local businesses interested in hosting these chargers, offering communities the opportunity to directly support the province’s clean energy future.

The new ultra-fast chargers will be strategically placed to improve regional connectivity and reduce wait times. Locations include:

  • St. John’s East (2)
  • Carbonear (2)
  • Grand Falls-Windsor (2)
  • Corner Brook (2)
  • Hawke’s Bay (2)

Building on Previous Investments

This expansion follows the earlier announcement of 11 ultra-fast chargers scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025. Once the new stations are complete, Newfoundland and Labrador will have 62 public fast chargers, including 21 ultra-fast units distributed throughout the province.

In addition, there are already more than 220 Level 2 chargers available at government buildings, workplaces, shopping centers, hotels, and restaurants, offering slower but widely accessible charging options.

“There are now 1,700 Battery Electric Vehicles registered in Newfoundland and Labrador – a 1,400 per cent increase over the past decade,” said Dr. Scott Reid, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “Increasing access to the number of Ultra-Fast electric vehicle chargers across the province ensures we have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the growing EV community and goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce our carbon footprint and work collaboratively with our partners to create a greener transportation sector.”
