According to a Facebook post by the law enforcement agency, the goal of the latest acquisitions is to provide officers with the tools they need to uphold the law. However, the two Model Ys will also “dramatically lower operating costs to the streets of Murphy.”
A study has shown that police EVs can save up to $5,000 per car per year in running costs. These savings come from fewer maintenance requirements and repairs. Police departments can also reduce fuel expenses by switching to electric cars.
The 2026 Model Y offers features that suit police work. For example, Tesla has significantly improved the cabin insulation, which can enhance radio clarity and situational awareness for patrol officers.
The latest iteration also comes with a better suspension system, allowing it to handle the weight of extra police equipment.
Tesla EVs have been used by public safety authorities worldwide. Down in Mexico, the Jalisco Police bought three Cybertrucks to beef up security ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A police department in Iceland has logged more than 1 million kilometers with an electric fleet made up mostly of Model Ys. The town of Mandelieu-La Napoule also added four Model 3s to its fleet in 2024.
