Maharashtra has become the first state in India to formally partner with Starlink to bring high-speed satellite broadband to remote and underserved regions. The agreement will extend reliable internet access to villages, tribal schools, health centres, and critical public infrastructure across the state.
On Wednesday the government signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, an initiative that aims to extend reliable connectivity to villages, tribal schools, health centres, and critical public infrastructure.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state’s decision reflects a long-term vision for inclusive digital growth. “With Starlink joining hands with Maharashtra, we are bridging the last digital divide connecting every village, every school, and every health centre, no matter how remote. This partnership reflects our commitment to build a truly connected, future-ready Maharashtra,” Fadnavis said.
Representatives from both sides attended the signing ceremony in Mumbai, including Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer. She emphasized the company’s mission of delivering accessible, high-speed connectivity through its large constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites.
“We pride ourselves in providing high speed connectivity whatever their background and wherever people are. We are, therefore, honored to collaborate with the Government of Maharashtra in this first-of-its-kind initiative,” Dreyer said. (via IndianExpress)
A 90-day pilot program will guide the first phase of deployment, overseen by a joint working group and reviewed quarterly by the Chief Minister. Early efforts will prioritize connecting government schools, tribal education facilities, primary health centres, disaster control rooms, forest outposts, and remote administrative sites.
The partnership is designed to support Maharashtra’s wider Digital Maharashtra strategy, while also integrating with ongoing programs in electric mobility, disaster resilience, and coastal development. Satellite connectivity will also be used to strengthen communication along key transportation corridors, including the Samruddhi Mahamarg, and enhance connectivity for coastal police networks, ferries, and ports.
Starlink has recently demonstrated its technology to Indian authorities and is preparing to expand its local presence, including plans for gateway earth stations and new hires in Bengaluru and Mumbai.
