With Ontario recently expanding green licence plate eligibility to include commercial electric vehicles weighing up to 4,500 kg, Tesla Cybertruck owners can now benefit from this initiative. Here’s how.
Steps to Exchange Your Plates
Exchanging your standard plates for green plates is a straightforward process, but you need to be prepared. Thanks for X user @darewecan for sharing this information with us.
- Gather Required Documents: Before heading to Service Ontario, make sure you have the following:
- Your current licence plates
- A valid driver’s licence
- A copy of your vehicle insurance
- Your vehicle’s current ownership document
- Book an Appointment: Although walk-ins are accepted, it’s highly recommended to book an appointment online to avoid long wait times at Service Ontario locations.
- Visit Service Ontario: Bring all the required documents to your appointment. Let the representative know you want to exchange your standard plates for green plates. They will provide a form to sign, confirming your request.
- Pay the Fee: The cost to switch to green plates is $59. This fee covers your new plates and the updated ownership card.
- Receive Your New Plates: Once the process is complete, you’ll be issued your new green plates and an updated ownership card. Ensure the information on both is accurate before leaving.

What Are Green Plates?
Green plates are special licence plates issued in Ontario for eligible electric vehicles (EVs). They come with incentives, such as allowing single-occupant EVs to use HOV and HOT lanes without additional charges. Until this week the Cybertruck was not an eligible vehicle due to its weight, leaving owners with black commercial Ontario plates, and without the perks of a green plate.
However, earlier this week the Ontario Ministry of Transportation expanded green licence plate eligibility for commercial electric vehicles, like the Cybertruck, with a registered weight of up to 4,500 kg.
