Ford delivers 140,000 free NACS adapters to EV owners

Ford has finally sent out 140,000 free North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters, giving its electric vehicle (EV) customers greater access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.

Ford was the first automaker to announce its adoption of Tesla’s NACS technology in 2023, a move that quickly prompted nearly every other car manufacturer to follow suit. While future Ford EVs will come with NACS ports built-in, current owners must still rely on adapters to bridge the gap between their CCS-equipped vehicles and Tesla’s Superchargers.

Ford initially partnered with Tesla to produce the adapters, but due to significant production delays, the company eventually shifted to a new supplier, Lectron.

Despite Tesla’s well-known charging reliability, Ford’s data suggests that Supercharger use among its EV customers remains relatively low. As of February 2025, only 20% of Ford EV charging sessions occurred at Tesla locations, with the majority still taking place at non-Tesla stations like Electrify America, ChargePoint, and EVgo, according to comments provided to PCMag.

However, that number should grow in the coming months with 140,000 Ford EV owners now receiving their free NACS adapters.

For those who missed out on the free adapter program, Ford is now selling the Lectron-made NACS adapters for C$280/US$200. The automaker plans to launch its first EVs with built-in NACS ports, eliminating the need for adapters, in 2026.
