Elon Musk has hinted that Tesla could soon unveil a flying car prototype, suggesting that the company’s long-delayed next-generation Roadster may feature technology unlike anything previously shown.
During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk discussed the upcoming Roadster and suggested a major demonstration could take place before the end of 2025.
“We’re getting close to… demonstrating the prototype,” Musk said, pausing before adding, “One thing I can guarantee is that this product demo will be unforgettable.”
When Rogan asked what would make it so memorable, Musk declined to elaborate. “I can’t do the unveil before the unveil,” he said. “But I think it has a shot at being the most memorable product unveil ever.”
The discussion began with Rogan asking about the long-promised second-generation Roadster, first unveiled in 2017 but delayed multiple times since its original 2020 target. Musk described the vehicle as featuring “crazy technology” and hinted that it might include capabilities beyond what’s expected from a traditional car.
Referring to his longtime associate Peter Thiel, Musk said, “My friend Peter once reflected that the future was supposed to have flying cars, but we don’t have flying cars. If Peter wants a flying car, we should be able to buy one.”
When Rogan asked if the new Roadster would actually be able to fly, Musk avoided confirming details, emphasizing that the reveal would speak for itself.
Musk has previously discussed adding a SpaceX package to the next-generation version, using cold-gas thrusters to improve acceleration and possibly allow the car to hover for short durations. It is not yet clear whether the upcoming demonstration will involve this technology, or something entirely different.
While Musk said Tesla aims to hold the demonstration before the end of the year, he did not commit to a specific date. “Whether it’s good or bad, it will be unforgettable,” he told Rogan.
