Elon Musk has revealed a new artificial intelligence (AI) initiative that combines the capabilities of Tesla and his latest startup xAI, describing the project as a system that could fundamentally change how software work is performed.
The project, which Musk refers to as “Macrohard” or “Digital Optimus,” is designed to autonomously perform complex computer-based tasks by pairing xAI’s Grok language model with a Tesla-developed AI agent capable of interpreting real-time screen activity and user inputs.
Musk shared details of the project on X, explaining how the system blends high-level reasoning with real-time execution.
“Macrohard or Digital Optimus is a joint xAI-Tesla project, coming as part of Tesla’s investment agreement with xAI,” Musk wrote.
According to Musk, Grok acts as the system’s “navigator,” analyzing information and directing actions, while Tesla’s AI agent processes a continuous feed of screen video, keyboard activity, and mouse inputs to execute tasks.
“Grok is the master conductor/navigator with deep understanding of the world to direct digital Optimus, which is processing and actioning the past 5 secs of real-time computer screen video and keyboard/mouse actions,” Musk explained.
The system is designed to function somewhat like the human brain, with two complementary components working together.
“You can think of it as Digital Optimus AI being System 1 (instinctive part of the mind) and Grok being System 2. (thinking part of the mind),” Musk added.
Designed to Automate Complex Software Workflows
The concept behind Macrohard is to create an AI platform capable of carrying out the types of tasks normally performed by human employees using computers. Instead of interacting with software through APIs or custom integrations, the system observes and interacts with the same interfaces humans do.
That means the AI could theoretically operate spreadsheets, write code, manage customer service tools, or navigate enterprise software without requiring specialized integrations.
“In principle, it is capable of emulating the function of entire companies. That is why the program is called MACROHARD, a funny reference to Microsoft,” Musk said.
If successful, such a system could represent a major shift in enterprise software and productivity tools, potentially disrupting traditional software vendors whose platforms rely on human operators.
Powered by Tesla Hardware and xAI Compute
Musk said the system will run using Tesla’s in-house AI4 chip combined with Nvidia-based servers used by xAI, creating what he described as a cost-efficient architecture.
“This will run very competitively on the super low cost Tesla AI4 ($650) paired with relatively frugal use of the much more expensive xAI Nvidia hardware,” Musk wrote.
The collaboration follows Tesla’s deepening ties with xAI. Earlier this year, Tesla agreed to invest $2 billion in the company, strengthening the relationship between Musk’s automotive and AI ventures.
Records from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that xAI filed a trademark application for the name “Macrohard” in August 2025.
While Musk did not announce a release timeline for the platform, he suggested the technology could represent a significant leap forward in real-time AI systems. “And it will be the only real-time smart AI system. This is a big deal,” Musk said.
