Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) v14 update is on the verge of reaching a much wider audience, with CEO Elon Musk confirming that the broad release will arrive with version 14.2. This follows the company’s usual rollout pattern, in which initial builds are released to a limited group of testers before expanding to the general fleet once stability is confirmed.
Based on Musk’s comments, FSD v14.2 will be the version distributed to all vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4), the automaker’s latest self-driving computer.
Musk’s confirmation came in response to an experienced FSD tester on X, ΛI DRIVR, who shared that “95% of the indecisive lane changes and braking have been fixed in FSD 14.1.2,” adding that they haven’t needed to touch the steering wheel in two days. AI DRIVR suggested this version was ready for a wide release, to which Musk replied, “14.2 for widespread use.”
This approach also mirrors the previous FSD v13 rollout, where v13.2 marked the point of broad public access. Based on current testing cycles and user feedback, the company is expected to begin that wider rollout before the end of the month.
Tesla’s v14, which is already at v14.1.2, is only available to a limited group of early access testers. Early testers have reported major improvements in decision-making, smoother lane changes, and a significant reduction in hesitation — long-standing challenges for the system. The company also introduced a new speed profile – Mad Max.
As noted above, this wide release will only be available for vehicles equipped with the latest HW4/AI4 self-driving computers. Despite repeated questions on X, the company has yet to comment on when, if ever, HW3/AI3 vehicles will receive their next FSD update. These vehicles are still stuck on v12.6.4, and have not received a major update in nearly a year.
Cybertruck owners have also been left out of the FSD v14 release thus far, but it is expected to roll out to the electric pickup before the end of October.
