Construction of Tesla Megafactory in Shanghai Officially Approved

The construction of a Tesla Megafactory in Shanghai has been officially approved by local authorities. Construction of the factory is expected to begin in May and production by the first quarter of 2025.

The Office of the Management Committee of Lingang New Area, China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone recently issued the “Decision on Administrative Licensing Approval for the Construction Plan of Tesla Megafactory Project Related to River in South Fengjie River Management Area.” It approves the Construction Plan related to the Tesla Megafactory project, reported by Tesla (Shanghai) within the management scope of Nanfengjie River, per Pandaily.

According to the data presented in the document, the project is located in Nanhui New Town, Pudong New Area, with its eastern boundary at plot N01-08 and western boundary at production protection green space N01-05. It extends south to Canghai Road and north to Wanshui Road, covering an area of 204,359.92 square meters.

Lu Yu, Director of the High-tech Department of the Administration Committee of Lingang New Area, mentioned the Megafactory at a press conference marking the ‘one-year anniversary’ of the construction of Shanghai’s Future Industrial Leading Zone. He said that Tesla’s new project is expected to complete trial production within this year. Yu also noted that Megapacks produced at the Chinese factory will be sold in global markets.

The Megapack factory in China is an excellent strategic move. This will increase production, which is important given the growing demand for commercial energy storage batteries. In addition, by producing batteries in China, they can be quickly delivered to Europe, Australia, Africa, and other countries located in nearby regions. In China, energy storage systems are also in high demand.
