ChargeStop Technologies has opened Canada’s first electric vehicle (EV)-only service station in Edmonton, Alberta. The station, located in the city’s Strathcona neighborhood, opened its doors on September 12, 2024, offering EV drivers not just fast charging but also a number of amenities.
Located at 8106 99 St. NW, the ChargeStop station is open from 6:00am until 10:00pm daily, and offers five 320kW CCS fast chargers. The company’s website does show that Tesla vehicles are able to charge at their location, but it appears they do not offer NACS connectors, so owners will likely need to bring their CCS adapter to charge.
ChargeStop also doesn’t say how much it costs to plug in at one of their chargers. We have reached out to the company for more information and will update this article when we get a reply.
One of the unique features of the station is the ability to reserve a charging spot through the ChargeStop mobile app. This booking system helps drivers avoid lineups, and also allows for tracking of your charging session and payment, streamlining the process for users.
While waiting for their vehicles to charge, drivers can take advantage of a variety of amenities. The station includes a convenience store with healthy snack options, Wi-Fi, a comfortable seating area, and clean washrooms.
Safety and security are also key priorities for ChargeStop. The station is well-lit and monitored by security cameras, and an on-site attendant is present to assist drivers.
According to ChargeStop CEO Tim Murphy, the inspiration for this concept came from the lack of adequate amenities at traditional charging locations. “EV drivers have been generally ignored by the service station industry. ChargeStop is a new concept that is app-driven, convenient, safe, and fast. Each station is designed to make charging an enjoyable experience for drivers,” Murphy said in a press release.
The opening of this Edmonton location is part of a broader strategy by ChargeStop to establish a network of EV-only service stations across the country. According to the company, they plan to expand to 20 locations by the end of 2025, opening locations in higher-density EV markets in provinces like British Columbia and Ontario using a franchise model.
