2024 Polestar 2 gets more range, power, RWD variant, and more

Polestar announced this morning a number of significant changes to its popular Polestar 2 for the 2024 model year. The electric sedan will receive an exterior facelift, along with several upgrades “under the hood” and a new rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant.

On the outside the Polestar 2 will debut what the automaker is calling the “SmartZone,” in which the front grille of the EV is no longer about “breathing” for an internal combustion engine (ICE), but about “seeing” the road ahead. To do this the 2024 Polestar 2 will get a front facing camera and mid-range radar. Polestar also updated the design of the 20″ wheels included with the Performance Pack upgrade.

Under the hood is where the more substantial changes have been made. According to the Swedish automaker the Polestar 2 will get new batteries and powertrains. Previously the single motor version of the Polestar 2 came in a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration, but for 2024 that has been changed to become a RWD variant.

The motors have also been upgraded with more power and efficiency. The RWD variant gets a 68 horsepower increase from 231hp to 299hp. It is also 1.2 seconds quicker in reaching 60mph, dropping to 6.2 seconds.
With a completely rebalanced configuration and torque-ratio, the two Dual Motor versions of the Polestar 2 are now rear wheel biased, increasing overall effectiveness and performance.

“Changing from front- to rear-wheel drive in the single-motor variants, and re-calibrating the torque ratio in the dual-motor variant for an increased rear-wheel drive feel, elevates the Polestar 2 driving experience to a whole new level. The updated Polestar 2 is an even more playful and agile car, retaining its compactness and complete sense of control, while at the same time becoming more mature with added comfort,” said Joakim Rydholm, Head of Chassis Development at Polestar.

The changes are also expected to increase the range of the Polestar 2 in all variants, with the automaker estimating 270 miles for the AWD and 300 miles of range for the RWD. These are still estimates as official numbers are still to come from the EPA.

Charging speed has also been increased to 205kW on the Long range Single motor (RWD) variant.

Pricing for the 2024 Polestar 2 was not announced for Canada and the US.
