Tesla‘s Giga Shanghai is reportedly gearing up to begin mass production of the refreshed Model Y, codenamed Project Juniper.
According to a report from Chinese media outlet LatePost, the updated Model Y will begin rolling off production lines at Giga Shanghai in January 2025.(via CnEVPost) The report doesn’t identify the source of the news, but it also talked about the departure of Song Gang, Giga Shanghai’s lead manager, which we told you about yesterday.
Beyond the standard five-seat configuration, Tesla is also reportedly planning to introduce a six-seat Model Y by late 2025. The six-seat variant will likely be exclusive for the Chinese market.
Details of the refresh Model Y are still unconfirmed, but will likely feature enhancements in design, technology, and performance, mirroring the significant updates introduced with the Model 3 refresh, known as Project Highland.
The new Model Y is expected to include a redesigned front end, improved energy efficiency, and a quieter cabin. Other refinements are likely to include interior upgrades such as multi-colored ambient lighting that wraps around the interior, and not just the dash, which itself will likely also feature a sleeker design.
One notable change seen in the updated Model 3, the removal of gear and turn signal stalks, will likely also extend to the new Model Y.
Giga Shangahi first started trial production of the new Model Y in October.
