Cheaper Tesla Model Y Spotted: Here’s What’s Changed

A possible low-cost version of the Tesla Model Y has been spotted in a new close-up sighting, showcasing a series of design changes both inside and out.

The prototype, which is believed to be a shorter-wheelbase variant, hints at Tesla’s strategy to deliver a more affordable crossover option without significantly compromising the Model Y’s core appeal.

Exterior Tweaks for Affordability

One of the most notable changes on the exterior is the removal of the panoramic glass roof, a signature feature of the current Model Y lineup. Instead, the prototype appears to use a solid roof design, which could help reduce both manufacturing costs and weight.

Additionally, the rear design has been simplified. The new reflective light bar that spans the back of existing Model Y is missing, replaced with a more traditional layout. The rear gray insert, often seen on the standard version, is now a painted body panel, further streamlining production.

The prototype also appears to lack the split headlight design and front light bar, though it retains a front bumper camera that was added during the recent refresh.

Interior Adjustments

Inside, Tesla seems to have stripped down some premium features to keep costs low. The prototype has textile seat bolsters rather than the vinyl leather finishes of current trims, and it appears that ventilated seating may not be included.

Rear legroom appears significantly reduced, likely due to the shorter wheelbase.

Other changes include the removal of the rear entertainment screen, which could reduce the vehicle’s appeal as a robotaxi. There are also no coat hooks, no parcel shelf, and no storage in front of the cupholders, with the center console getting a complete redesign.

Notably, the familiar screen-mounted gear shifter appears to remain, along with a single stalk for turn signals, continuing Tesla’s minimalist control philosophy.

When Will Tesla Launch The Affordable Model Y?

Tesla was originally planning to unveil their new affordable models in June. However, they missed that timeline, but according to the recent Q2 2025 earnings call, production of this vehicle started last month.

Based on recent reports and rumours, we could see a possible launch of the new more affordable Model Y by the end of the third quarter, with the first deliveries taking place before the end of the year.
