2021-2022 Tesla Model Y earns highest possible Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS

The 2021-2022 Tesla Model Y has earned yet another top safety award, this time from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The safety agency awarded Tesla its highest possible rating for the electric SUV – Top Safety Pick+.

In order to be eligible for the award, a vehicle must pass a number of stringent tests with ‘good’ ratings, and have advanced crash prevention systems.

To qualify for either of the Institute’s two awards, vehicles must earn good ratings in six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. They must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

For crashworthiness, the latest version of the Model Y earned ‘Good’ ratings in all categories.

Both versions of the headlights available in the Model Y (the Performance variant features the new design) earned ‘Good’ and ‘Acceptable’ ratings, although the agency didn’t specify which earned each rating.

The good news for Tesla Vision cars without radar is that the front crash prevention system earned superior ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.

The Model Y now joins the Model 3, which has earned the Top Safety Pick+ rating three years in a row.
