Volvo announces the EM90 electric minivan

Volvo has officially announced the electric EM90 minivan. The EM90 will only be available in China at launch, and is expected to come with a driving range of up to 450 miles (724km) using the Chinese CLTC standard.

The new EM90 is based on Geely’s SEA platform, which other brands owned by the Chinese holding company have adopted. It has a single 200 kW rear engine drawing power from a 116 kWh battery. Volvo will, however, release an all-wheel-drive version in the future.

The 450 mile range is based on the always optimistic CLTC standard, so if the EM90 ever makes it to North America, expect an EPA range rating much lower than that.

Other important specs include 8.3 seconds acceleration time from 0 to 60 km/h for the rear-wheel-drive version, 28 minutes charging time from 10 to 80 percent, and bi-directional charging for sending out power from the battery.

The EM90’s semi-autonomous driving and driving assistant features are supported by cameras, radar sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar system. Customers can look forward to Level 2+ autonomous driving.

Inside, the EM90 offers very few physical buttons. However, there is a prominent 14.5-inch touchscreen for accessing the settings, a display for the instrument cluster, and another display for the back passengers. There is a small remote for controlling the infotainment system.

The EM90 cabin seats six (the last row has two luxurious seats). The second-row seats have plush upholstery, heating, leg rests, and folding tables.

Volvo’s new electric minivan won’t be cheap, coming with a starting price of 818,000 yuan, or about CAD$155,000 or US$114,000.
