First public EV fast charger opens in Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador can finally remove the label of being the only province in Canada without a public high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charger.

As part of a project to install 14 DC fast charging stations along the Trans-Canada Highway, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s first station opened this week. Located at the North Atlantic gas station at 3 Liam Hickey Drive in Holyrood, the station also features a Level 2 charger.

The network of DC fast chargers will be built at strategic points along the Trans Canada Highway and in Gros Morne National Park, linking the east and west coasts of the island. The other locations are expected to come online before the end of the year.

In October last year the province put out a tender seeking bids for locations of the chargers. The provincial government is contributing $1 million towards the project, the federal government is contributing $770,000, and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is adding the final $500,000.
