Lufthansa Group adding Starlink to 850 aircraft

Lufthansa Group has announced it will deploy SpaceX’s Starlink across its entire fleet. Beginning in the second half of 2026 and continuing through 2029, the airline group plans to install Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite system on roughly 850 aircraft operated by all of its brands, making it the largest Starlink rollout by any European airline group to date.

Lufthansa says the new service will be available free of charge for status customers and Lufthansa Travel ID users, regardless of which cabin they are flying in. The group’s multiple airlines include Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, and Air Dolomiti.

“In our anniversary year, in which we are celebrating Lufthansa’s 100th birthday, we have decided to introduce a new high-speed internet solution from Starlink for all our airlines. The Lufthansa Group is taking the next step and setting an essential milestone for the premium travel experience of our customers. Connectivity on board plays an important role today, and with Starlink, we are not only investing in the best product on the market, but also in the satisfaction of our passengers,” said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group.

The rollout will happen in stages, starting in late 2026 and running through 2029. While Lufthansa has not yet disclosed which routes or aircraft will receive Starlink first, some group airlines have already outlined their initial plans. Brussels Airlines intends to begin with its Airbus A320 fleet before expanding to its long-haul aircraft, while SWISS will integrate Starlink into its fleet planning during 2026.

Lufthansa now joins a rapidly growing club of airlines embracing Starlink as the future of inflight connectivity. Air France, IAG, SAS, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United Airlines, and many others have all committed to bringing Starlink onboard. Even regional and turboprop fleets are joining in, with carriers like airBaltic, Air New Zealand, and Air Canada deploying the system on smaller aircraft.
