Tesla Model Y gets 7-seat option, new wheels, and black interior in U.S. refresh

Tesla has a series of updates to the Model Y lineup in the United States, bringing back the 7-seat configuration while also rolling out some other interior and exterior upgrades across its Premium and Performance trims.

According to an update to Tesla’s online configurator on Monday night, the 7-seat option is now available for US$2,500, however it is limited to the Model Y Premium Long Range AWD. Despite the Juniper design refresh, the third row remains the same as it was in the legacy Model Y – best suited for children, shorter trips, or for the occasional need for extra seating without stepping up to the larger and more expensive Model X.

Alongside the new seating layout, Tesla has also refreshed the Model Y’s interior. All Premium and Performance versions now come standard with a black headliner, with the long-running light grey interior headliner now only available on the Model Y Standard. This change gives the cabin a darker, more premium look and aligns with recent changes made in China.

Also aligning with updates in China, Tesla has upgraded the infotainment hardware across the upper trims. The Premium and Performance Model Y now ship with a larger, higher-resolution 16-inch center display, up from the previous 15.4″ screen.

Importantly, only the Performance variant gets the 2K QHD (Quad High Definition) display, which was previously exclusive to the Model Y L in China. The Standard variant retains the 15.4″ display.

On the exterior, Tesla is continuing its move away from chrome. All Model Y trims in the U.S. now come standard with matte black badging, replacing the silver finish that had remained on some variants. This gives the vehicle a cleaner, more modern look that matches the black trim already used around the windows and mirrors.

Wheel options have also been updated. Tesla has discontinued the silver 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels that were introduced with the Juniper refresh, seen on the left below, and replaced them with a new dark grey version on the right. The darker finish better complements the blacked-out trim and gives the Model Y a more cohesive and aggressive appearance.

The wheels are offered as a US$2,000 upgrade, also only on Premium trims.

Notably, none of these changes have reached Canada yet. The Canadian Model Y lineup, sourced from Giga Berlin, still lacks a 7-seat option, retains the grey headliner on most trims, and continues to offer the older silver Helix wheels. We have yet to see Giga Berlin implement these changes to its production lines, but they should arrive fairly soon.
