VW pulls the plug on 2026 ID. Buzz in the U.S. & Canada [UPDATE]

Volkswagen has confirmed it will not offer the all-electric ID. Buzz in the United States and Canada for the 2026 model year, just one year after the retro-styled van launched in North America. While the automaker insists the model has not been cancelled outright, mixed messaging from dealers and a pause in production have raised questions about whether the ID. Buzz will ever regain momentum in the market.

In a statement provided to Carscoops, a Volkswagen spokesperson confirmed the decision, saying, “Following a careful assessment of current EV market conditions, we have made the strategic decision not to move forward with MY26 ID. Buzz production for the U.S. market.”

The company framed the move as a temporary pause rather than a cancellation, emphasizing that the ID. Buzz remains an important “halo product” for the brand.

However, reports from multiple U.S. dealers suggest the situation may be more complicated. Several customers have shared messages allegedly sent by sales managers stating that the ID. Buzz has been discontinued, with no 2026 models planned and current dealer inventory representing the final availability. While Volkswagen pushed back on claims that the model has been axed entirely, it acknowledged that it is preparing for a “MY27 transition,” though it declined to provide further details.

According to dealers, production for the U.S. market has been halted, with remaining 2025 model year vehicles either already on lots or still arriving from ports. Some dealers have also suggested there are currently no firm plans to resume U.S. production for 2027, though this appears to vary by region and internal communication.

All of the information shared by Volkswagen thus far has been specific to the U.S. market. We have reached out to Volkswagen Canada to see if it also applies north of the border, and will update this article when we receive a response.

UPDATE 2:10pm PT: VW Canada has confirmed the 2026 ID. Buzz will also not be sold in Canada. VW Canada also confirmed it is not being cancelled, and an updated 2027 model will be released.

“We are pulling ahead the 2027 model year, and “skipping” the 2026 model year,” the company said in a statement to Drive Tesla.

Pricing has long been viewed as the ID. Buzz’s biggest challenge in the United States. The electric van launched with a starting price around US$60,000 (it’s also expensive in Canada at C$77,495 for the entry-level RWD version), paired with a 91 kWh battery and an EPA-rated range of roughly 234 miles (376 km).

For many buyers drawn in by nostalgia and hype, the combination of a high price and mediocre specs proved difficult to justify.

Volkswagen may be using the 2026 pause to rework the ID. Buzz for improved range, lower costs, or both. A VW dealer employee posting on Reddit claimed the model is being re-engineered for 2027 to address pricing and efficiency concerns, though Volkswagen has not confirmed those plans.

For now, the ID. Buzz is not officially cancelled in the U.S., but its future is far from secure with no 2026 model year, production paused, and dealers warning customers that remaining stock may be the last. If the ID. Buzz does return, it will need to arrive with a significantly lower price and or meaningful upgrades to avoid becoming a short-lived experiment rather than the electric icon VW hoped for.
