Rivian has issued a new safety recall affecting nearly 35,000 EDV (electric delivery vans) in the United States, after identifying a problem that could lead to a damaged driver-side seat belt pretensioner cable.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the driver’s seat belt pretensioner cable in 2022–2025 EDV models can become damaged over time due to repeated misuse, most commonly when a driver sits on a buckled belt.
If the cable fails, the pretensioner may not restrain the driver properly in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. NHTSA estimates that 100% of the 34,824 vehicles covered by the recall contain the defect, although there have been no reports of crashes or injuries linked to the defect.
The fix involves two elements. Rivian has already pushed an over-the-air (OTA) software update to all impacted EDVs. The update adds automatic detection if the driver attempts to sit on a buckled seat belt—helping prevent the kind of misuse that could damage the pretensioner in the first place.
Additionally, Rivian will inspect the driver’s seat belt pretensioner assembly and replace it, if necessary, free of charge.
The affected vans were built between December 10, 2021 and November 8, 2025. Rivian says the issue was resolved in production beginning November 8, when the seat belt misuse-detection feature was added before vehicles left the factory.
