Rivian R1 LFP Battery Bug Leaves Drivers Stranded; Software Fix Coming

Some Rivian owners were left stranded recently as their R1 LFP battery state of charge dropped from as much as 20% to zero in a matter of seconds. For some, it was an annoyance in a parking lot, while for others, their R1 dropped to 0% charge in live traffic.

Rivian’s software has a range buffer built in to alert owners to the state of charge and give them ample time to find a charging outlet. However, it seems like a bug related to firmware 2025.38 is responsible for the specific issues with LFP R1’s.

The bug miscalculates the LFP batteries state of charge.

Compounding the issue is that if the battery is fully discharged, it also drains the 12-volt battery on board, leaving owners with an expensive tow and a battery replacement to cover.

Rivian has confirmed that they are preparing a fix in update 2025.42, which will be released soon.

There is no word on whether Rivian will provide any compensation to owners affected or if it will push the update, given the numerous social media posts reporting the issue.

For now, if you own a Rivian R1 LFP, the best advice is to keep your battery topped up and avoid dropping the state of charge below 30 per cent until Rivian releases the patch update.
