Ford adds automatic lane changes to BlueCruise 1.5, but it’s not coming to older models

Ford has officially rolled out the latest update to its hands-free driving software, BlueCruise 1.5, with a new feature – automatic lane changes without driver input. However, the feature is only available on newly built vehicles and will not be backwards compatible with ‘older’ Ford models.

What’s New in BlueCruise 1.5?

BlueCruise 1.5 builds on earlier versions by allowing the vehicle to autonomously shift lanes to pass slower traffic or clear the way for faster cars—without the driver needing to use the turn signal. This marks an upgrade from previous versions, which required driver initiation via the signal stalk.

Ford estimates that up to 45% of lane changes could now be automated with the new system. Ford says the update also improves lane centering, adjusts vehicle positioning to avoid cars drifting into adjacent lanes, and sharpens curve-handling performance.

Not Available for Everyone

Unlike previous software-only updates to BlueCruise, version 1.5 requires upgraded Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) hardware, including newer sensors and faster processors. As a result, older Ford models with earlier BlueCruise versions (1.3 or below) won’t be eligible for the new features via an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Only 2025 and newer models equipped with the necessary hardware—starting with the Mustang Mach-E—can access BlueCruise 1.5.

How It Works

Once engaged on a pre-mapped highway, the system scans for slower vehicles or fast-approaching traffic and automatically initiates a lane change. Audible and visual alerts appear before the move, giving the driver time to cancel the maneuver by nudging the wheel or signaling in the opposite direction.

The software also incorporates real-time behavior analysis. Ford tracks when and why drivers disengage the system to refine future versions—an approach that led to features like lane repositioning and assisted lane changes in BlueCruise 1.2.

Pricing and Availability

As mentioned, BlueCruise 1.5 is only available on newer Ford vehicles, starting with the 2025 Mustang Mach-E GT and Rally trims, which come with a one-year BlueCruise subscription included. For other trims, customers can activate BlueCruise at purchase for US$2,495 or opt for a subscription plan: US$49 monthly or US$495 annually.

Pricing for BlueCruise 1.5 north of the border is C$64,99 monthly or C$650 annually. A one-time purchase of BlueCruise in Canada costs C$3,295.
