Tesla launches FSD Early Access Program in the U.S., but only for HW4 vehicles

Tesla has officially opened its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Early Access Program in the United States, giving owners a chance to test upcoming features before they’re rolled out more broadly. The new program was hinted at in a recent update to the Tesla mobile app, and now it’s officially live, though it comes with some limitations.

The biggest is that as of now, the program is only available for vehicles equipped with Tesla’s latest Hardware 4 (HW4) computer, which began appearing in new Tesla models in 2023. That means vehicles built on earlier hardware platforms—including HW3, which is still common in the majority of FSD-capable Teslas—aren’t eligible to join the program at this time.

Given how Tesla has been prioritizing FSD releases for HW4 vehicles (HW3 is still on v12), it is unlikely we’ll see the FSD EAP program become available to HW3 owners any time soon.

The Early Access Program is being presented as a way for Tesla to accelerate development of its supervised Full Self-Driving system. According to the prompt now appearing in the app for eligible owners:

“Enroll to experience early features before they’re widely released. Provide your feedback and related vehicle data to help make the next release our best yet.”

This suggests that participating drivers won’t just be passive users—they’ll be part of an ongoing feedback loop, helping Tesla refine and perfect future versions of its FSD software before public deployment. It’s a clear sign that Tesla is looking to move faster with development and polish new capabilities in real-world conditions, with a broader data set from diverse road environments.

Previously the FSD Early Access Program was available to employees. When they received early access to a software update, their vehicle’s VIN was included on the release notes, so as to avoid leaks. It looks like public owners enrolled in the FSD EAP program may be subject to the same constraints as their release notes now also contain their VINs.

While the program is now officially rolling out, not every HW4 owner with FSD in North America is seeing the option to enroll just yet. Tesla appears to be conducting a gradual rollout. It is also currently only available to U.S. owners, as we have yet to see any Canadians receive the invitation.
